15th European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry

15th European Congress of Veterinary Dentistry

Queen’s College, Cambridge, UK

8th-9th September 2006.

The Congress started in its now traditional manner with fully subscribed Wetlabs, on the pre-congress Thursday. This year they were organised by the EVDS Board, with support from Simone Ostermeier of the EVDC, and the tutors. The morning session was taken by Philippe Hennet and Jan Schreyer, both of the EVDC, and focused on the use of new ultrasonic tips that may be especially useful in daily veterinary dentistry: subgingival curets, diamond orifice openers for root canal preparation, diamonds tips for coronal enlargement and diamonds ball excavators for cavity preparation. We were grateful to Satelec for proving a large number of dental workstations and a selection of the new types of ultrasonic tips for all delegates to have maximum ‘hands on’ time. The afternoon session was taken by Ira Luskin and Norman Johnston from the AVDC, who covered maxilectomies, mandibulectomies and jaw fracture repair.

There was a Welcome Reception on the Thursday evening for all delegates with drinks and a buffet sponsored by Pfizer, who gave a presentation on a new periodontitis vaccine, soon to be launched in Europe.

The full Congress opened on Friday morning, and over the two days covered new research findings, technique reviews, and case reports. The keynote speaker was Dr Ahktar of the Royal Preston and Blackpool Victoria Hospitals, UK, who gave an overview of Human Oral Cancer, which stimulated many questions afterwards on the comparative aspect with our patients.

There was also a well attended Poster exhibition with 6 posters on display.

On the Friday evening there was the other tradition of the EVDS- a Gala Dinner. Delegates met in ‘Old Hall’ in Queens College, a richly decorated medieval hall, for a drinks reception. We then moved to the main dining room for an excellent meal, wonderful company (as is usual for the EVDS) followed by dancing into the early hours of the next morning (except the President who had fractured ribs from a mountain bike accident!).

The EVDS is grateful for the sponsors who not only provided a commercial exhibition, but whose generosity made such a great Congress possible. The Major sponsors were Hills, Pfizer, Royal Canin, Satelec, IAMS, Technik Technology and Arnolds Veterinary Products. Other Sponsors were Vetdent, Accesia, AFP Imaging, Kruuse, Molar, and Vetspecs Europe.
